What's in this dog walking agreement
The full text. Words in brackets are filled in from the form above.
- 1. The parties. This agreement is between [Owner name] of [Owner address] (the Owner) and [Dog walker or business name] (the Walker) for dog walking services.
- 2. The dogs. The Walker will walk these dogs: [Dogs and anything the walker should know]. The Owner confirms this information is accurate and will tell the Walker about any change in health or behaviour.
- 3. Walks. Walks take place [Walk schedule]. Collection and drop-off times may vary within the window. The Walker may shorten or reschedule a walk in extreme heat, storms or other conditions that would put the dogs at risk.
- 4. Behaviour. The Owner confirms that, to their knowledge, the dogs have not bitten or seriously threatened a person or another animal, except as described above. The Walker may stop walking a dog with others, or end this agreement, if the dog shows aggression.
- 5. Off lead. The Owner's instruction on letting the dogs off the lead is: [Off-lead consent]. The Walker will use judgement and keep dogs on the lead near roads, livestock and anywhere local rules require it.
- 6. Health and vaccinations. The Owner confirms the dogs are microchipped, wear a collar and tag where the law requires, and are up to date with vaccinations, flea and worming treatment. The Owner will not book a walk for a dog that is unwell or in season unless the Walker agrees.
- 7. Keys and access. Any key, lockbox code or alarm code the Owner provides will be kept securely, not labelled with the address, and returned when this agreement ends. The Walker will leave the home secure after each visit.
- 8. Emergencies. If a dog is injured or becomes ill, the Walker will try to contact the Owner and then [Emergency contact]. If neither can be reached, the Owner authorises the Walker to take the dog to [Vet name and phone] or the nearest available vet for treatment the vet considers necessary. The Owner will pay the vet's fees.
- 9. Price and payment. The Owner will pay [Price]. The Walker will invoice weekly or monthly and payment is due within seven days.
- 10. Cancellations. The Owner may cancel a walk by giving at least [Cancellation notice] of notice. Walks cancelled at shorter notice may be charged in full. If the Walker cancels, the walk is not charged.
- 11. Liability and insurance. The Walker holds public liability insurance and will take reasonable care of the dogs. The Walker is not responsible for illness or injury that was not caused by its negligence, including conditions the dog already had. The Owner remains responsible for damage or injury the dogs cause that is not the result of the Walker's negligence.
- 12. Ending the agreement. Either party may end this agreement with one week's written notice, or straight away if the other seriously breaks it. Keys will be returned within three days of the end date.
- 13. Governing law. This agreement is governed by the laws of [Governing law], and the courts of that place may hear any dispute about it.
- 14. Entire agreement. This document is the whole agreement between the Owner and the Walker about its subject. It replaces anything said or written before it, and any change must be in writing and agreed by both.
- Signed by: the Owner, the Dog Walker, each with a signature, printed name and date.
When to use a dog walking agreement
Use it with every new client before the first walk. It is the one place you record the dog's quirks, the vet, the emergency contact and whether you can let the dog off the lead, and the owner signs to say it is all correct.
It also works for drop-in visits and puppy check-ins: change the walk schedule to describe the visits.
What the key clauses do
Dog walking agreements matter most on the day something goes wrong. These clauses cover the usual problems.
- The dogs and Behaviour make the owner disclose health and history, including any past bites.
- Off lead records the owner's instruction in their own words.
- Emergencies lets you take a dog to the vet when nobody answers, with the owner paying the bill.
- Keys and access sets out how you look after the house key and when it comes back.
- Cancellations protects the walk slot you held for them.
How to adapt it
Add your maximum group size if you run group walks, and any local licence number if your area requires one. If you also offer home boarding or pet sitting, write a separate agreement for that, since overnight care raises different questions.
This template is a starting point, not legal advice. Check local rules on dog control and licensing for walkers.

Questions people ask
Do I need the owner's permission to take their dog to the vet?
It is wise to have it in writing. The emergencies clause authorises you to seek treatment when you cannot reach the owner or their emergency contact.
Should I ask about past bites?
Yes. The behaviour clause asks the owner to confirm the dog's history and lets you stop group walks if a dog shows aggression.
Can I charge for late cancellations?
The template lets you charge in full for walks cancelled with less notice than you set. Choose a notice period that fits how you plan your rounds.
Is this template legal advice?
No. It is a plain-English starting point that a small business can adapt. Laws differ between countries and states, so have a lawyer check it before you rely on it for a high-value job or anything regulated.
