Why send a PDF rather than a Word file

A Word document can look different on every computer: missing fonts get swapped, pages break in new places, and tracked changes or comments you forgot about show up for the reader. A PDF looks the same everywhere, can't be edited by accident, and is what most people expect for a contract, invoice or application.

How faithful is the conversion

Ordinary documents, with headings, paragraphs, lists, tables and pictures, convert cleanly. A few things can shift, so open the PDF and check it before you send it.

• Unusual fonts are replaced with a close match if the font isn't available to the converter
• Text boxes, columns and complex headers may move slightly
• Tracked changes and comments are not included; accept or remove them first
• Files up to 4 MB; pictures are usually what makes a Word file large

Your file and privacy

This is the one tool here that can't run in your browser, because reading Word's format properly needs a converter on a server. The upload is used for that conversion and nothing else: no account, no copy kept, and the PDF is returned to your browser. Every other tool on this site works without uploading anything.

Getting a Word document signed
