Comparison
Sign PDF vs Smallpdf for sending documents to sign
Short answer
Smallpdf Pro costs $12 a month month to month or $9 a month billed at $108 a year, and includes unlimited signature requests through its sister platform Sign.com. Sign PDF costs $10 a month and places the signature, initials and date boxes for you, which Smallpdf does not. Smallpdf is better value if you also compress, convert and edit PDFs every week.

Why people switch to Sign PDF
- Boxes placed and matched to signers instead of dragged into place
- Everything in one place rather than split across Smallpdf and Sign.com
- Signers confirm an email code before the document opens
- A sealed PDF with a QR code to a public verify page
- $10 a month month to month against $12
When Smallpdf is the better choice
- You compress, convert or edit PDFs most weeks and want one subscription for all of it
- You want the lowest yearly price: Pro at $9 a month
- You only need 2 signed documents a month and want to pay nothing
- You need a team plan with central billing for up to 19 people
- Your security review asks for ISO/IEC 27001
Smallpdf is a PDF toolkit; signing happens on Sign.com
Smallpdf sells more than 30 PDF tools: compress, convert, merge, OCR, edit text, redact and AI summaries. Signing your own PDF is one of those tools. Requesting signatures from other people now runs on Sign.com, which Smallpdf bundles with its paid plans as an unlimited Sign.com Premium subscription.
That gives you templates, digital sealing, a certificate of completion, document access codes and an activity timeline on the Sign.com side.
We do one job: getting a document signed by other people with a record that holds up. We do not compress, convert for download, or edit PDFs.
What does Smallpdf cost?
With monthly billing, Smallpdf's pricing page shows Pro at $12 a month and Team at $10 a seat a month for 2 to 19 seats. With yearly billing, Pro is $9 a month ($108 a year) and Team is $7 a seat a month. Business, for 20 seats or more, is quoted.
There is a 7-day free trial, and Smallpdf says cancelling during it means no charge.
Our Full plan is $10 a month with no yearly option. On annual billing, Smallpdf Pro is $1 a month cheaper than us and includes far more PDF tools.
The free tier
Smallpdf's free plan gives limited access to its tools with daily download limits, and a free Sign.com account limited to 2 documents a month. If you need two signatures a month and nothing more, that costs nothing.
Our Light plan also covers 2 documents a month, at $5. What you get for that is automatic field placement, the six-digit email code for signers, the sealed PDF and the public verify page.
Placing fields by hand against having them placed
Smallpdf and Sign.com have you drag each signature and date field into place. On a two-page letter that takes a minute. On a 20-page employment contract with initials on every page and a witness block at the end, it takes longer, and missed initials mean a second round.
We read the document and place the boxes, including initials on every page, and assign each one to the right signer. You can also type "employee initials every page" and the fields are added.

Questions people ask
Can I request signatures with Smallpdf?
Yes, through Sign.com, which comes with Smallpdf's paid plans as an unlimited Sign.com Premium subscription. The free Sign.com account is limited to 2 documents a month.
How much is Smallpdf Pro?
$12 a month on monthly billing or $9 a month billed as $108 a year, per Smallpdf's pricing page. There is a 7-day free trial.
Does Smallpdf place signature fields automatically?
No. You place each field yourself. Sign PDF reads the document and places signature, initials, date and name boxes for each signer.
Can I use Smallpdf and Sign PDF together?
Yes. Some people edit or merge in Smallpdf, then send the final PDF through us for signature.
Is a document signed through Sign.com or Sign PDF legally binding?
For ordinary contracts, electronic signatures from either are recognised under laws such as the US ESIGN Act, EU eIDAS and the UK Electronic Communications Act 2000. Wills, some deeds and notarised documents still need ink. This is not legal advice; ask a lawyer about anything high-stakes.
